Mailing addresses

Write the address in the format suited for mail delivery. Use Canada Post's guidance for addressing mail.

Bilingual geographic names

Use the English name of a province or territory in English texts, but do not translate the names of cities. For example, the cities Montréal, Québec and Trois-Rivières have only one spelling and should always be written in French.

Phone and fax numbers

Use non-breaking hyphens (Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen) in phone and fax numbers

Example: Writing phone and fax numbers

If you need help, call 1-800-622-6232

613-999-9900 ext. 123

Toll-free numbers and collect calls

Certain designated area codes beginning with the number 8 (such as 800, 855, 866, 877 and 888) are toll-free. Do not, however, refer to them as toll-free.

Only include 1- before a long-distance number that is toll-free. The CRA accepts collect calls under specific circumstances, and if the caller dials 1-, they will be charged.

Hours of service

Always include the hours of service when giving a phone number. Also make note if the office is closed on a certain day. For information about formatting hours of service, refer to: Dates and times.

Email addresses

Write out email addresses instead of embedding them within your text. Write them in full, in lowercase and as active links.

Write: Please submit your request by email to helpdesk@canada.ca.
Don't write: Email us to submit a request.
